This weekend continues to be dominated by Taylor Swift, but a new contender has just entered the fray to give The Eras Tour a run for its money. Martin Scorsese’s Killers Of The Flower Moon hit theaters on Friday and is already making its mark.
In its second Friday of circulation, AMC and Swift’s concert movie added another $10.4 million to its bottom line while looking to garner anywhere between $30 to $33 million this weekend. The total it makes this weekend will push the film past $100 million domestically once Sunday is over.
AMC themselves, however, are holding back on predictions, estimating somewhere between $26 to $27 million in case walk-ups don’t deliver as much, similar to how it played out last weekend.
On the other end, Killers of the Flower Moon is looking to score $23 million this weekend, and, as Hollywood Reporter states, is the third-best nationwide opening for a Scorsese movie. It comes in behind Shutter Island ($41 million) and The Departed ($26.9 million), not adjusted for inflation. The Apple Original’s performance is not coming up short at all, especially considering the massive 3-hour 26-minute runtime.
The percentage of ticket buyers on Friday under the age of 35 was 46 percent, making the amount of older and younger moviegoers much more equal than anticipated. 27 percent of that 46 was between the ages of 25 and 34. Approximately 38 percent of the older demographic was older than 45, making Apple more comfortable that their profits would be steady due to the older audiences not rushing out to theaters immediately.
Flower Moon is a remarkable milestone for Apple. The film’s budget cost $200 million, and Apple stated they intend to spend $1 billion per year for theatrical movies to build up its name on the big screen.
