Deadline reports that Disney’s Enchanted 2 has found a new writing team in J. David Stem and David N. Weiss best known for Shrek 2 and The Smurfs. The film will be directed by Anne Fletcher who previously directed The Guilt Trip, The Proposal, and 27 Dresses. The original film released in 2007 featured Amy Adams, Susan Sarandon, Patrick Dempsey and James Marsden, though no cast has been announced for the sequel at this time.
Enchanted told the story of Giselle (Adams), a princess from a fairy tale kingdom transported to the real world by the evil queen (Sarandon). Once there Giselle finds herself falling in love with a divorce lawyer (Dempsey) and must ultimately decide to stay with him in New York or return home to marry Prince Edward (Marsden). The film was a parody of/homage to animated Disney fairy tales, and featured songs from longtime Disney composer Alan Menken and lyricist Stephen Schwartz, three of which received Oscar nominations for Best Original Song.
Enchanted was a smash hit in its day but news about the sequel has been very slow. The film was originally supposed to have been written by Jessie Nelson back in 2010, but that plan fell through. The new writers, Stem and Weiss, found success with Shrek 2 as a fairy tale spoof, though their track record has been somewhat spotty otherwise. Disney has yet to announce a timetable for release.
