Promising a major “emotion” picture, Pixar’s Inside Out has a new trailer detailing the film’s premise. Audiences will go inside the minds of a young girl and her parents and listen to the personifications of Joy, Anger, Disgust, Fear, and Sadness as they determine each person’s actions. Diane Lane and Kyle MacLachlan voice the parents and Kaitlyn Dias is the girl, Riley. Amy Poehler, Lewis Black, Mindy Kaling, Bill Hader, and Phyllis Smith star as the voices in Riley’s head. Michael Arndt (Little Miss Sunshine, Toy Story 3) wrote the screenplay and Pete Doctor (Monsters Inc., Up) directed.
While the trailer is mostly concerned with outlining the film’s central premise, we can make a few guesses about the plot. Given the film’s concern with emotions, it’s likely that the dysfunction in the family is not just there for laughs. A few interesting details stand out: for one thing, in both Mom and Dad’s heads, the emotions behave like organized committees while Riley’s are less organized and more impulsive. Also, while the original teaser set up Joy as the leader of the group, no one’s personification of Joy does anything during the exchange. Sadness is in charge of Mom’s head while Anger is in charge of both Dad and Riley. We’ll likely see the leadership torch get passed to different emotions to reflect Riley’s state of mind as the story progresses. Inside Out seems to have hit upon an interesting and novel way to visualize how its characters develop.
