The 2003 film Save the Green Planet is a fantasy comedy that focuses on a disillusioned man who thinks that aliens are invading Earth and his adventures trying to thwart this invasion.
Recently, the film’s script has been worked into an English screenplay and is currently picking up steam in production, according to Variety.
Originally, the creator of the 2003 version of the film, Jang Joon-hwan, was going to head production on this English version and base it on a screenplay by writer Will Tracy, who has worked on films such as The Menu. But things, as often happens in the film industry, have changed. Poor Things director Yorgos Lanthimos will now be working on the film, which is currently planning on filming this summer and is making strides in figuring out its cast.
One person who is currently in talks for the film is Emma Stone, who is coming off her success in Poor Things, which includes a nomination for Best Actress at the Academy Awards and is also directed by Lanthimos. It is suspected that Stone would take on a supporting role in the film, as in the original the main character’s girlfriend was a part of the plot.
If she signs onto the film, Stone would also be working with Lanthimos in their sixth production together.
The original film saw much success internationally, winning acclaim in fantasy festivals in Bucheon, Buenos Aires and Brussels. Jang even earned the Golden Bell Award for Best New Director in South Korea.
While there is some time left to fit more pieces of this production’s puzzle before filming, it will be interesting to see what Lanthimos does next and how he interprets this cult classic.
