According to Deadline, Emma Stone has locked down deal to star in Disney’s Cruella sequel.
Due to the pandemic, Cruella was released simultaneously in theaters and on Disney+ on May 26, earning more than $222 million worldwide in ticket sales. The release of the upcoming sequel won’t be for a while now and it’s still uncertain whether it will pursue a pure theatrical release or have a simultaneous streaming option just like the first film.
Following Scarlett Johansson’s lawsuit against Disney, there was some apprehension circulating the media as to whether or not other stars from the studio’s theatrical-day-and-date titles would also pursue legal action. However, Endeavor executive chairman tells Deadline about the agency’s client Stone and her Cruella 2 deal:
“While the media landscape has been disrupted in a meaningful way for all distributors, their creative partners cannot be left on the sidelines to carry a disproportionate amount of the downside without the potential for upside. This agreement demonstrates that there can be an equitable path forward that protects artists and aligns studios’ interests with talent. We are proud to work alongside Emma and Disney, and appreciate the studio’s willingness to recognize her contributions as a creative partner. We are hopeful that this will open the door for more members of the creative community to participate in the success of new platforms.”
Disney has yet to release PVOD figures for Cruella, but it’s clear that the standalone movie about the villainess’ origins was successful enough to move forward with a sequel. It was also previously announced that director Craig Gillespie and writer Tony McNamara are returning to the franchise.
Deadline reports that via U.S. Smart Terrestrial TVs, Cruella’s U.S. PVOD revenue figure was close to $21M over the four-day Memorial Day Weekend.
On Rotten Tomatoes, Cruella was praised by critics at 74% fresh and sparked future awards season buzz for the film. It also earned an ‘A’ on CinemaScore from audiences.
