Emma Stone and Dave McCary’s production company, Fruit Tree, has entered a first-look contract with Universal Pictures.
Founded in 2020, Fruit Tree is an American production company focused on innovative film and television. Since its launch, the company has produced a notable number of projects, including When You Finish Saving the World (2022), Problemista (2023), and I Saw the TV Glow (2024).
Stone and McCarthy initially launched Fruit Tree with a deal at A24, welcoming producer Ali Herting to the team in October 2020. Now with this new Universal Pictures partnership, Fruit Tree is set to make an even stronger creative impact on the industry.
Stone, known for her iconic roles as Mia Dolan in La La Land (2016) and Olive Penderghast in Easy A (2010), and McCarthy, former Saturday Night Live writer-director, definitely bring a mix of talent to Fruit Tree. The couple first met on the set of SNL Live in 2016 and married in 2020. With producer Herting on board, this team is a sure powerhouse.
Fruit Tree’s captivating lineup includes projects such as Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things, Julio Torres’ Problemista, Jane Schoenbrun’s I Saw the TV Glow, and Jesse Eisenberg’s upcoming film A Real Pain. They’ve also collaborated with Showtime on The Curse, where Stone starred and was an executive producer.
Upcoming releases include Bugonia, a new collaboration with Lanthimos set at Focus Features, and The Yogurt Shop Murders, an HBO docuseries directed by Margaret Brown.
According to Variety, NBCUniversal Studio Group chairman Donna Langley shared, “I’ve long admired Emma’s versatility and fearless approach to every role, and paired with Dave’s unique comedic vision, they’ve achieved exceptional work together. We’re excited to support their continued creative ambition.” A very heartfelt statement!
Stone and McCary have shared their gratitude for the opportunity saying, “Fruit Tree was founded with a commitment to ambitious filmmakers and bold storytelling. Partnering with Universal allows us to push those boundaries further, and we’re grateful to Donna, Peter, and Erik for this collaboration. We can’t wait to see where this journey leads.”
