Following the huge box office success of Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron this past weekend, Marvel has announced two cast members joining the next movie in the making for phase three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Emily VanCamp will be returning in her role as Agent 13 from Captain America: The Winter Solider . Martin Freeman, known for his roles in Sherlock and The Hobbit trilogy, has also been announced for the cast, though his character has yet to be announced.
Captain America: Civil War will follow the debate between Captain America, aka Steve Rogers, and Iron Man, aka Tony Stark, about whether or not “enhanced” people should be indexed and kept track of following the divisive events of Age of Ultron. VanCamp returns as Agent 13, who has already displayed fierce loyalty to Captain America. In the original comic, she has a romantic background with Steve Rogers and is the niece of Peggy Carter, played by Hayley Atwell in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger and in her own television series, Agent Carter.
The popular and highly anticipated movie already has a long list of Marvel Cinematic Universe veterans, including Chris Evans as Steve Rogers and Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, along with Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff (aka Scarlet Witch), Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes (aka the Winter Soldier), Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson (aka Falcon), and several other Marvel favorites.
The movie is directed by the Russo brothers, who also helmed Winter Soldier and will be helming the next two Avengers movies, Infinity War Parts 1 and 2. Captain America: Civil War is currently filming for its release next year on May 6, so more casting news is sure to follow, including whatever role Martin Freeman has taken on.
Emily VanCamp’s television series Revenge will air its series finale on May 10, and she is also starring in the indie movie The Girl in the Book. Martin Freeman, fresh off his role as Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit trilogy, will be returning as John Watson in the BBC series Sherlock this winter.
