Following the success of her feature film Saltburn, the psychological thriller starring Barry Keoghan and Jacob Elordi, director Emerald Fennell took to X on Saturday to tease her next project, an adaptation of Emily Brontë’s classic Gothic romance novel Wuthering Heights. While the project is still in the early stages of development, with actors and a release date yet to be announced, Fennell confirmed the project by captioning her post “Be With Me Always. Take Any Form. Drive Me Mad,” one of the iconic quotes from Brontë’s novel.
Brontë’s 1847 novel follows the story of two families in the Yorkshire moors, the Earnshaws and the Lintons, detailing the intense relationships between members of the two families. Told through the eyes of Mr. Lockwood, a tenant at Thrushcross Grange, who learns of the tumultuous relationship between the two families from Wuthering Heights servant Nelly Green, the main plot of the novel is the tragic love story between Heathcliff, the adopted son of Mr. Earnshaw, and Mr. Earnshaw’s daughter Catherine. Brontë’s novel has been adapted several times for the big screen, most recently by Andrea Arnold in 2011, with the first adaptation coming from Laurence Olivier back in 1939. Fennell’s adaptation will mark the first screen production of the classic love tragedy in the 2020s.
