Fans of Absolutely Fabulous may finally be getting the feature film they’ve been pining away for since the series’ official end in 1996. Edina and Patsy is the movie’s working title and is based off the popular BBC series, which had its original airing between 1992 and 1996 but has never seemed to want to stay off the air since.
The original series featured co-stars Jennifer Saunders (also the series’ writer) as Edina Monsoon and Joanna Lumley as Patsy Stone, two high-powered and heavy drinking women in London and their hilarious exploits as they try to have the most fabulous life possible (as the original title suggests). It was a cult hit, and has since resurfaced over the years to much rejoicing by its fans. Saunders, who wrote the series and has been working on a feature script, finally revealed on The Jonathan Russ Show that the movie is indeed moving forward, with the first draft of the script completed.
Since the original series ended in the 90s, the show has come back several times, most notably with a revived series that aired from August 2001 to December of 2004, along with three twentieth anniversary special episodes in 2011 and 2012.
The series saw numerous cameo appearances by some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, and Saunders has stated that she’d like to see nearly all of those big stars to return in some capacity or other, from Helena Bonham Carter (Cinderella) to Idris Elba (Pacific Rim). Saunders has also stated – jokingly, or not – that she’d like Angelina Jolie to join the cast, once the movie moves past the final writing stage.
