Edgar Wright celebrated the completion of filming his adaptation of Stephen King’s The Running Man with some footage and behind-the-scenes images, Screen Rant reports. Based on the author’s 1982 dystopian novel, The Running Man follows a desperate man who enters a reality show run by an oppressive government, where contestants evade hitmen, to win money for his family.
Starring Glenn Powell, Josh Brolin, and Colman Domingo, Wright announced on Instagram that production had wrapped with a picture of himself and Powell holding a board containing all the signatures of the project’s cast and crew.
Several days later, Wright, Powell, Brolin, and Domingo presented footage at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, which included glimpses of Powell as the protagonist, Ben Richards, Brolin as the reality show’s psychotic producer, Ben Killian, and Domingo as the egotistical host of the show, Bobby Thompson.
The presentation was lively, with the four praising each other’s work. Powell, in particular, said of Wright’s vision of the film: “This movie doesn’t just have touches or flavors of things audiences love, this is the full meal.”
Comparisons have been made of this new version of The Running Man with the novel’s first adaptation from 1987 starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and real-like game show host Richard Dawson, but the CinemaCon footage seems to prove that Wright aims to adhere more closely to the book with Powell’s Richards being an everyday protagonist as opposed to Schwarzeneggar’s police officer, the executive producer and game show host being seperate characters versus Dawson’s Killian being both host and executive producer, and the competition taking place across the country instead of in one location in the 87 version.
Edgar Wright’s The Running Man is set for release on November 7, 2025, and will be distributed through Paramount.
