Famous comedian Eddie Murphy is currently being considered for the role of Inspector Clouseau in the upcoming Pink Panther reboot produced by the Amazon branch of MGM Studios. According to a source close to Murphy, Clouseau is the perfect fit for the actor since the latter has long admired the original Clouseau actor, Peter Sellers.
Directed by Jeff Fowler, who had worked on the Sonic the Hedgehog movie, the film is written by Wedding Ringer writer Chris Bremner and will be produced by Dan Lin, Julie Andrews, Larry Mirisch, and Jonathan Eirich. Both Lin and Eirich will produce through their own Rideback banner alongside executive producer Ryan Halprin.
According to some sources, the film will be a live-action/CGI hybrid involving both Clouseau and the cartoon Pink Panther. Most of the plot is currently under wraps, though there is some talk about the film being a buddy cop film starring the two characters working together for the first time in the franchise. Previously, the Pink Panther had mostly resided in the animated opening credits outwitting a cartoonish Clouseau and in animated shorts developed after the film. While these sources also say that the film is in deep development stages, Murphy’s possible casting and the first cinematic leading role for the colorful feline is enough to create a sizable amount of buzz for old and new fans of Clouseau’s misadventures.
