Dwayne Johnson is known to grace the big screen from animation to comedy but he has undergone a transformation for his newest role. Johnson has become the UFC legend Mark Kerr for The Smashing Machine.
Benny Safdie is behind the film who co-directed and wrote Uncut Gems and Good Time along with his brother. The upcoming film will mark Safdie’s first solo directorial debut, according to Variety. Johnson portrays Mark Kerr who was “a mixed martial artist who fought from 1997 to 2009, winning four ADCC World Championships.” The film is not the first to involve Kerr as there was an HBO documentary by the same name that aired in 2002, which showed his substance abuse issues as well as strained relationships with his girlfriend and trainers.
Johnson is accompanied by Emily Blunt as Kerr’s wife Dawn Staples, as well as Bas Rutten, Lyndsey Gavin and Oleksandr Usyk. Johnson wanted to work on The Smashing Machine with Safdie. Johnson believes Safdie is a creative storyteller especially when it comes to real people and he wants to be a part of films that have a deep meaning. Both of them are also producing the film.
The Smashing Machine will hit theaters on October 3, in the meantime the trailer is available below.
