After the first spinoff to the action-packed Fast & Furious franchise proved to be successful at the box office, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Jason Statham confirmed that they are returning for a sequel to Hobbes and Shaw, according to sources at Comicbook.com.
Hosting a Q&A over Instagram this week, Johnson was questioned about the possibility of a sequel to Hobbs & Shaw 2 to which the actor confirmed that the film has entered development. Johnson did not elaborate who would be directing or when the film would be released, but did continue that the franchise would be moving forward with a sequel.
“We are developing now the next film, the next Hobbs & Shaw movie, and I’m pretty excited about it,” exclaimed Johnson. “We just gotta figure out the creative right now, and the direction we’re going to go.”
Due to the environment of the COVID-19 pandemic and the indefinite closure of movie theaters across the globe, Fast & Furious 9 was postponed a calendar year to 2021, leaving the release date for the Hobbs & Shaw sequel yet to be determined. Hobbs & Shaw accumulated $760 million world-wide following its theatrical debut last August. Ryan Reynolds and Kevin Hart made surprise cameo appearances in Hobbs & Shaw, though it’s currently unknown whether or not either will appear in the sequel.
