Drop, a new thriller film from horror juggernaut Blumhouse and Universal Pictures, opened to a mostly positive reception this past weekend. The film sports an 84% critic score and an 80% audience score, making it the highest regarded Blumhouse release in some time.
Previously in 2025, Blumhouse released The Woman in the Yard and Wolf Man, both of which received mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike. That makes Speak No Evil the last Blumhouse release until now to have a positive score, that being an 83%. The studio seems to have a rough relationship with the Rotten Tomatoes website, as many of their more recent films reviewed poorly. These include Afraid, Imaginary, Night Swim, Five Nights at Freddy’s and The Exorcist: Believer.
Drop is directed by Christopher Landon (Happy Death Day) and stars Meghann Fahy (Your Monster, The White Lotus) and Brandon Sklenar (It Ends with Us, Vice). It is a thriller, unlike most of Blumhouse’s horror filmography, and it features Violet (Fahy) going on a date at a fancy restaurant when she starts receiving ominous drops on her phone. It’s up to Violet and her date, Henry (Sklenar), to find out who is sending the drops before Violet is forced to do something she will regret.
With Drop now released, Blumhouse has a slew of horror sequels ready to fill out the rest of 2025. M3GAN 2.0 releases on June 27, Black Phone 2 on October 17 and Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 on December 5. M3GAN and The Black Phone both reviewed and performed well, so sequels are not surprising. Five Nights at Freddy’s did not sit well with critics, but fans of the game series loved it, and it made a lot of money. Fans will undoubtedly come back for a sequel in December.
