After Christopher McDonald made comments in March that Adam Sandler was in the process of drafting a sequel to the classic comedy Happy Gilmore, Drew Barrymore confirmed with Sandler via text to see if McDonald’s statements were true on the latest episode of The Drew Barrymore Show. After the show came back from commercial break, Barrymore said Sandler came back to her: “This just in, I have breaking news — I’ll just say this from my source, that it is ‘in process.’”
McDonald made his comments while appearing on The Ken Carman Show With Anthony Lima: “I saw Adam about two weeks ago, and he says, ‘McDonald, you’re gonna love this’…I said, ‘What?’ He says, ‘How about that,’ and he shows me the first draft of Happy Gilmore 2. I don’t wanna be a liar, but he did show me that, and I thought, ‘Well, that would be awesome.’ So, it’s in the works. Fans demand it, dammit!”
THR reached out to both Netflix and a representative for Sandler, but both declined to comment on whether or not a Happy Gilmore sequel was in the process of being made.
Sandler then revealed on an episode of the Dan Patrick Show that McDonald’s comments were supposed to be kept secret, saying that McDonald texted him, “‘By the way, that thing you told me not to talk about, I talked about.’ I said, ‘Oh, that’s good news.’”
Nearly a decade ago, The Hollywood Reporter asked the film’s director Dennis Dugan about the possibility of a sequel and he stated, “I can’t imagine [Sandler] would ever do that, but it’s Hollywood, so you never say that’ll never happen.”
