Taking cues from I, Frankenstein, Dracula Untold will give audiences a new perspective on a classic horror monster. Universal Pictures and Legendary Entertainment will tell the origin story of the world’s most famous vampire on October 17, 2014. Luke Evans stars as Drac with Charles Dance (Tywin Lannister on Game of Thrones), Sarah Gadon, Dominic Cooper, and Samantha Barks in supporting roles. Dracula Untold will be the feature film debut for director Gary Shore.
Taking cues from Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Dracula Untold will tell the story of Vlad III, Prince of Wallachia (located in present day Romania). Vlad III (Evans) was also known as Vlad the Impaler, he reportedly used very brutal methods of torture and was fond of capital punishment (can you guess his preferred method?). The Ottoman Sultan (Cooper) shown in the trailer, Mehmed II or Mehmed the Conquerer, invaded Wallachia in the 1460s and demanded that Vlad provide boys for the Ottoman army. Vlad refused and the Ottoman’s invaded.
According to the trailer, Vlad sought the aid of strange man on a mountain (Dance) to give him the strength to fight off the invasion. Dance gives Vlad something to drink and the Prince begins to transform into a vampire. What happens next will likely be a reinterpretation of history similar to Maleficent’s reinterpretation of Sleeping Beauty. We’ll find out how later this year (and no, it does not look like these vampires sparkle).
