Rick Famuyiwa’s indie-crime-comedy, Dope is due to hit theaters in six days, and with its impending release comes another trailer (red band this time). It’s got everything you’ve come to expect from a Dope trailer: drugs, nostalgia, Los Angeles teens coming of age, discussions of the “n word,” Kendrick Lamar’s “i” playing in the background. But, it also has male masturbation, discussions of anal sex, and lovely young women vomiting. In case you haven’t gotten the message, the movie is a bit irreverent.
Malcolm (Shameik Moore) is carefully surviving life in a tough neighborhood in Los Angeles while juggling college applications, academic interviews, and the SAT. A chance invitation to an underground party leads him into an adventure that could allow him to go from being a geek, to being dope, to ultimately being himself.
