With Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice less than a year away, it’s been revealed that, besides Lex Luthor and each other, Batman and Superman will find themselves fighting against Doomsday, an antagonist in the comics originating from the planet Krypton. Though it’s not been revealed who is playing the baddie, Doomsday’s role may very well be providing the muscle behind the operation while Luthor runs it.
In the comics, Doomsday was the result of an alien experiment that was designed to create the perfect weapon. During the “Death of Superman” story arc, Doomsday succeeded in killing the hero because he was an equal match to the Man of Steel, though he died in the process. It’s not clear whether that will be the case in Dawn of Justice (although, in true comic book fashion, both are resurrected to fight again later in the comics). Doomsday’s inclusion was first confirmed on the Shanlian On Batman podcast by comics news scooper Umberto Gonzalez (aka El Mayimbe), who noted that the design of Doomsday is “incredible.”
Doomsday joins a long list of DC characters, including the titular characters Batman and Superman, played by Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill respectively, along with Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg), and a host of others. The movie will be directed by Zack Snyder (Man of Steel).
Following Dawn of Justice, the DC Cinematic Universe will continue with Justice League Part 1 and Justice League Part 2, announced for release in 2017 and 2019, providing a good counter to its rival, the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
