Per Deadline, Adam McKay‘s Don’t Look Up has added more awards winners to its cast in the form of Mark Rylance and Michael Chiklis. This brings the grand total of Academy Awards attached to this project at nine, and yes three of them are from Meryl Streep.
In addition to Rylance and Chiklis, the political satire stars Jennifer Lawrence, Leonardo DiCaprio, Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett, Chris Evans, Jonah Hill, Himesh Patel, Timothée Chalamet, Ron Perlman Ariana Grande, Kid Cudi, Matthew Perry, and Tyler Perry. So will Rylance and Chiklis or any of these actors actually have a line? Who knows, but it is quite the eclectic group.
McKay is no stranger to large ensembles either. The director and writer of the Anchorman series constantly had stars and cameos appearing in his film. The description reads that the film follows the “story of two low-level astronomers, who must go on a giant media tour to warn mankind of an approaching comet that will destroy planet earth.” It is billed as of right now as a political comedy, which lines up with McKay’s last two films, Vice and The Big Short.
However, here’s hoping he regains some magic from his initial comedic chops from his Will Ferrell comedy days. Those movies have a lot of heart that seems to be lacking in McKay’s latest films that are seemingly more well-liked and actually gained McKay an Oscar for his writing of The Big Short. So what do I know? I know I really like those Will Ferrell comedies he directed. I digress.
With the addition of Rylance and Chiklis, it is certainly interesting to see how McKay will balance this abundance of talent. Both actors are fantastic in their own rights, but this is looking as smaller parts as the film is currently shooting.
Anticipation is building already for Don’t Look Up, which is set for a Netflix release near the end of 2021.
