Donald Glover to Join ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’

With filming on Spider-Man: Homecoming set to commence shortly, the cast is starting to fill out. News today broke that Donald Glover is in talks to join the webslinging revamp. Glover’s casting comes with a backstory as the Community alum and hip-hop artist (under the name Childish Gambino) saw himself in a grassroots campaign to be cast in The Amazing Spider-Man (the role eventually went to Andrew Garfield); Glover also voiced Miles Morales in the Disney XD animated series Ultimate Spider-Man.

There’s no word yet on which character Glover might be portraying in Spider-Man: Homecoming but if plans work out he will join a steadily building ensemble led by the new Spidey – Tom Holland (who debuted the character to much ado in the current blockbuster Captain America: Civil War). Oscar winner Marisa Tomei (The Wrestler) is on board as Aunt May and Iron Man himself, Robert Downey Jr. will make an appearance in the film; Michael Keaton appears likely to portray the film’s villain. The youthful-skewing ensemble includes rising talent Zendaya, Michael Barbieri (Little Men), Laura Harrier (One Life to Live) and Tony Revolori (The Grand Budapest Hotel). Jon Watts (Cop Car) directs from a screenplay by John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein.

Glover, who was hand-picked by Tina Fey for a writing job on the acclaimed television comedy 30 Rock at the age of 21, has been steadily amassing a strong body of work on both the big and small screen. He last appeared in the Oscar nominated hit The Martian and appeared in last summer’s Magic Mike XXL. He also created and stars in an upcoming show for FX entitled Atlanta.

Spider-Man: Homecoming will hit theaters on July 7, 2017.
