The long awaited sequel to 1996’s Space Jam could potentially star Don Cheadle as the big bad opposite Lebron James and the Looney Tunes. In a recent interview with CinemaBlend, Cheadle’s Black Monday co-star Paul Scheer let it slip that Cheadle would be playing the villain in Space Jam 2. The actor’s role has been discussed before – some thought Cheadle would be playing himself a la Bill Murray’s role in the original, but Cheadle quickly shut those rumors down. “I actually can’t tell you what I’m playing,” said Cheadle in January.
Perhaps Cheadle has been more willing to share with his fellow actors than the media. Said Scheer to CinemaBlend, “Actually Don Cheadle, who I do Black Monday with, he’s the bad guy in Space Jam [2], and he said LeBron’s really great. He was great in Trainwreck too.”
Cheadle has yet to confirm these rumors or expand more on his involvement in the film. Shooting for Space Jam 2 wrapped in September of 2019, with Malcolm D. Lee directing, and has currently begun the animation process. In May, Star Trek Discovery‘s Sonequa Martin-Green was revealed to be playing James’s wife. James confirmed that the film is still set to be released July 16, 2021, despite many productions being pushed back or resigned to digital release due to the coronavirus.
