While January is infamous for being a slow month for movies the first weekend of February has already kicked off to a much stronger start with Dog Man leading the charge with a 36 million opening. While sitting at a grand total of 40 million only 4 million was brought in from overseas markets, a smaller turnout than expected but with the budget already recouped the new DreamWorks animated film isn’t in any fear of flopping anytime soon. A lot of Dog Man’s success is being attributed to the smaller pickings regarding family films despite the two Disney options still screening. This edge of broader appeal along with the association as an adaptation of Dave Pilkey’s beloved books gave it the leg up over the other premiere of this weekend.
In second was another newcomer Companion. Companion, a new horror thriller from writer/director Drew Hancock starring Jack Quiad and Sophia Thatcher has drawn positive reviews from critics and audiences alike. With Nosferatu falling off the top ten after six weeks Companion has easily taken its place as the fare for the horror fans.
Mufasa stays neck and neck with its box office rival Sonic 3 as both reach 230 million for totals, with Mufasa hanging on to the top 3 with 6.1 million for this weekend. The Disney Lion King prequel film will likely stay at theaters for a few weeks more before a Disney+ streaming premiere.
4th for this week went to One Of Them Days, the comedy film in its third week still healthy at 6 million just barely beaten by Mufasa.
As the obligatory joke goes Flight Risk took a nose dive for its second week plummeting down to 5th with 5.62 million for only its second week. Many are predicting a flop with only 20.9 million earned so far against a reported 25 million budget.
In 6th Sonic 3 keeps the pace up for Paramount as thier family film in theaters for now with 3.22 million for the weekend. Sonic 3 will also likely be making its own way to Paramount+ soon after a very valiant fight against Disney’s Mufasa.
For 7th Moana 2, still in theaters even with its own Disney+ premiere brings in 2.83 million likely boosted by that streaming kick.
A Complete Unknown stays on the top ten in 8th by the power of Timothée Chalamet channeling Bob Dylan.
In 9th A24’s The Brutalist keeps showing the festival hype was right as its seventh theatrical week sees 1.86 million keeping it in the top 10.
10th went to Den Of Thieves 2: Pantera which beat Nosferatu and Presence with a 1.6 million weekend.
