‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ Marks Biggest Opening Weekend Of 2022 With $187M

It’s been two days since the highly anticipated Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hit theaters. Fans have been awaiting the sequel film since the original Doctor Strange was released way back in 2016, and patient Marvel fans showed their support for the film this weekend.

The Sam Raimi film has officially garnered an opening gross of $187M domestically and $450M worldwide. Since its premiere on Friday, the movie has held the top box office spot in the United States and most other countries, thus dethroning Bad Guys. In fact, the film is around 7% from making back the production costs of the film after only three days.

Fans have been raving about the picture’s originality, being the MCU’s first movie to explore a horror-like genre as well as truly showing the far extent of the multiverse.

The Marvel film’s current sale numbers are reassuring for the studio because over the pandemic, like most other industries, movie ticket sales were at a low as most people were more willing to wait for movies to stream for free than buy them early. But with the opening of Benedict Cumberbatch’s return as Doctor Strange, the studio has proven that their past numbers were just that, products of the pandemic.
