‘Divergent’ Sequel ‘Insurgent’ Will Launch in 3-D

Lionsgate has revealed that Insurgent, the second film in the Divergent trilogy, will hit theaters in 3D. In promoting the use of the format, Lionsgate also revealed a set of 3D character posters. Included are posters for characters portrayed by returning actors Shailene Woodley (The Fault In Our Stars), Theo James (Underworld: Awakening), Ansel Elgort (Men, Women & Children), Miles Teller (Whiplash), Maggie Q (Live Free or Die Hard), Mekhi Phifer (8 Mile), Zoe Kravitz (X-Men: First Class), and newcomer to the series Keiynan Lonsdale (Dance Academy) as Uriah.

Insurgent will pick up right after the events at the end of the first film, as Tris (Woodley) and Four (James) managed to temporarily suppress the hostile takeover by Erudite forces and escape the city. The second installment will see them as fugitives on the run from Erudite’s leader, Jeanine, portrayed by Kate Winslet (Labor Day), as they fight both their own personal demons and for the future of their city. The 3D movie will be directed by Robert Schwentke (RED), and is scheduled to be released on March 20th, 2015.

3D has had a somewhat hit-or-miss run up until now, often leaning toward feeling like a gimmick. Insurgent, therefore, will have to largely deliver in terms of story and character in order to surpass criticism and accusations of striving for higher ticket prices. As far as the poster campaign goes, Lionsgate seems to focus on flashy visual representation in the form of guns and action. We’ll have to wait and see what this means for the film’s overall presentation. A still version of the poster for Four is below, and if you want to see them in all their motion-goodness, check out the series’ website here.
