The upcoming Divergent has released new images showing its leading duo played by Shailene Woodley and Theo James geared up for action. The story comes from a YA book series by Veronica Roth about a society that sorts individuals into different communities based on the results of some kind of brain test (details can be found in the trailer after the jump). Neil Burger directs the screenplay from Evan Daugherty and Vanessa Taylor. Divergent will reach theaters on March 21, 2014.
According to the trailer, main character Tris (Woodley) learns that her results from the test were inconclusive; she is divergent and will never properly fit into any society. She must keep her status as a divergent a secret from others. She eventually joins a militant underground movement where she meets Four (James). Another image released by Summit shows a still of Four’s elaborate back tattoo from the trailer.
Aside from the iconic names and images the rest of the trailer looks exactly as one would expect from this sort of material, and that does not inspire a lot of confidence in the quality of this adaptation. Summit has already planned a sequel to adapt the next book, Insurgent, but Neil Burger will not return to direct, another red flag. On the other hand, we have been surprised before and, if nothing else, it is nice to see Hollywood attempting to broaden the appeal of science-fiction films with more female lead characters.
