In a sleepy weekend at the box office, Disney’s latest box office hit has retaken first in the domestic charts with $26.3 million in it’s third week dethroning newcomer Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 which saw whopping 70% drop in its second week yet it’s still lower than its predecessor 76% drop taking home $19.5 million. Zootopia 2 officially crossed $1 billion making this the first time any film studio has released two one billion profit films back to back in the same year. Despite those massive success all is not marrying bright for Disney with its most recent theatrical release from 20th Century Fox and directed by James L Brooks bombing with its opening performing massively behind expectations or did it? As it stands Ella McCay currently sits as the latest name on the list of underperforming mid budget adult dramas of 2025. Netting only $2.1 million it landed in seventh behind Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution which just barely crawled ahead into sixth. Not helping Ella McCay is poor reviews from both audiences and critics meaning this film will likely not see a slow crawl back to black that some of the other victims of the ‘mid budget curse’ were able to pull off.
Third place went to Wicked: For Good with $8.55 million and it’s fourth week still sitting comfortably in the top five trail behind newcomer Dhurandhar, an international film from Yash Raj Films which took home $3.5 million.
5th place went to Now You See: Me Now You Don’t with $2.38 million and it’s 5th week. An impressive feet for such a small franchises third outing.
Eighth place this week went to the re-release from Universal, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, staring Jim Carrey as the titular Grinch earning $1.85 million from its limited rerelease in theaters. Eighth place went to A24’s Eternity, with $1.77 million in its third week. 10th place was taken by Hamnet with $1.49 million in its third week.
Other notables for this week include newcomer Silent Night Deadly Night the remake of a 1984 slash of the same name. Deadly Night earned $1.12 million coming up just shy of the top 10 though hopefully this under the radar film can score higher numbers at the box office to go with its many kills.
