Disney is not throwing away their shot… to keep their title as one of the top media conglomerates on the planet. Hamilton mastermind Lin-Manuel Miranda revealed on Twitter this morning that Disney has scored the worldwide rights to the upcoming film adaptation of his hit Broadway musical. What Miranda forget to include, however, is the massive price tag Hamilton came with: a whopping $75 million, making for possibly the most expensive acquisition deal ever.
Revealing the film’s release date to be October 15, 2021, Miranda additionally announced the adaptation will include the musical’s original broadway cast, featuring himself in the title role, and was filmed at The Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway. Tommy Kail directed both the film and stage version of the show, shooting three different live performances to ensure all angles were met.
Considering tickets for Hamilton featuring the original Broadway cast went for nearly $500 a seat, the film version comes as nearly a guaranteed success for Disney. Additionally, once the film finishes its theatrical run, it will most likely pick up millions of further viewers through streaming on Disney+.
Hamilton is set for theatrical release Oct. 15. 2021.
