Marvel is always secretive about upcoming films, but they have been particularly tight lipped about who Jude Law will be playing in Captain Marvel. His character is described as being the leader of an elite force of Kree fighters known as the Starforce, but his character remains nameless.
The initial theory was that he would portray Kree superhero Mar-vell, who was close to Carol Danvers and led her on the path to being a hero. Disney recently gave this theory a boost when they posted a still from the film online that labeled Law as “Mar-Vell, the leader of Starforce.” This was almost immediately taken down and replaced with just “Leader of the Starforce.”
Another leading theory predicts that he will be villain Yon-Rogg, especially after Funko and Hasbro released box art with that name attached to Law’s character. But on Funko’s site, that was also immediately revised and converted to “Star Commander.”
It may be possible that he will play a blend of both characters, as there will likely be significant reimaginings of the comic characters in the conversion to the Cinematic Universe. This would explain the mystery around his character name, especially if there are identity reveals within the film.
Will Law be playing a hero or a villain? His character will be a key player from what we’ve been told, so the answer to that question will largely shape the plot of the film.
If Marvel can continue to keep the truth locked down, we’ll find out when Captain Marvel hits theaters on March 8.
