Disney has had a few versions of the age-old story of Beauty and the Beast, and tonight, another one will be added. There is the 1991 Disney classic, starring Paige O’Hara as the voice of Belle, and the live-action adaptation, starring Emma Watson as Belle and Dan Stevens as the Beast, which grossed $1.26 billion at the worldwide box office.
Collider revealed an exclusive first look at a new interpretation of the story, Disney As Old As Time: A Twisted Tale, as well as the synopsis. The synopsis reads, “Clever and imaginative, Belle longs to escape her provincial town to find adventure. Only, Belle’s father won’t leave. He’s waiting for her mother to return— a mother Belle can’t remember. But when Belle’s father is taken prisoner by a terrifying Beast, she offers to take his place to save his life. Belle finds the Beast’s enchanted rose, and when she touches it, images flood her mind with memories of the mother she believed she would never see again. Stranger still, she sees that her mother is none other than the Enchantress who cursed the castle and all its inhabitants. Shocked and confused, Belle and the Beast must work together to unravel a dark mystery about their families. As Old as Time is the first book in a series of manga adaptations of the bestselling Twisted Tales novel series, which reimagines classic Disney stories in a surprising new way.”
O’Hara recently talked about how “There are things that [Belle] did that I appreciate more now that I’m an older woman.”
The film is reimagined in a Disney comic turned reformatted webcomic on Webtoon, launching at 8 PM ET. The tale was written by Beatrice Bassoli and Francesca Siviero, with art done by Chiara Bracale and Rossella Gentile.
The story is based on Liz Braswell’s As Old As Time. The Twisted Tales series was published by Disney-Hyperion and is made up of installments reimagining stories such as The Little Mermaid, Frozen, Peter Pan, and more, revolving around a “What if?” scenario. Webtoon will soon be releasing the next wave of series, including Astonishing X-Men, The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, Stitch & The Samurai: The Complete Collection, Star Wars: Darth Vader – Black, White & Red and Star Wars: Lost Stars.
