

Via The Hollywood Reporter, Akiva Schaffer (The Naked Gun, Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers) will be directing Stepsisters, a Cinderella spinoff focusing on her stepsisters Anastasia and Drizella. The screenwriters for the film are Doug Mand (Most Likely to Muder, Pretty Smart) and Dan Gregor (How I Met Your Mother, Dolittle). The producer is Ali Bell (PEN15, Ghostbusters) for Party Over Here, which is founded by Schaffer, Jorma Taccone (Land of the Lost, Over Your Dead Body) and Andy Samberg (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Celeste And Jessie Forever). Cady Stark and Jessica Virtue (Mulan, Tangled) supervise the studio for the spinoff film.
Disney released a live action remake of the 1950’s classic motion picture in 2015 starring Lily James (Mama Mia! Here We Go Again, Baby Driver), Richard Madden (Eternals, Game of Thrones) and Cate Blanchett (Carol, Ocean’s 8). The fairy tale focuses on Cinderella who is the maid for her stepsisters and her stepmother and encounters abuse after her father tragically passes away. Her luck changes after she goes to the Prince’s ball and leaves behind a glass shoe to escape the life she had been living.
Disney has been on a roll with live action films following Cinderella, from Aladdin to The Little Mermaid to Beauty and the Beast. Recent live action films that are in the works are Tangled, who recently casted Teagan Croft (Titans, True Spirit), Milo Manheim (Zombies, Prom Pact) and Kathryn Hahn (WandaVision, Step Brothers) and Moana, which will be premiering July 10, 2026.
Disney additionally focuses on stories told from various perspectives such as Cruella, a 2021 film starring Emma Stone (Easy A, La La Land), following the titular character on her journey being a fashion designer and the events leading up to her narrative in 101 Dalmatians. A film centering Gaston from Beauty and the Beast is in the works, though details have not been further discussed.
