Josh D’Amaro, the new CEO for the Walt Disney Company, announced the release dates for two highly anticipated sequels at a recent investors meeting. At the meeting, he stressed the good news of high profile releases for Disney in the next few years, including follow-ups to the live action Lilo & Stitch and Incredibles 2.
Lilo & Stitch 2 will hit theaters on May 26, 2028, which is Memorial Day weekend. This is the same release window the first film had last year, with the original grossing over $1 billion at the global box office. Chris Sanders will return to pen the script and voice Stitch in the sequel. Disney seems to be fond of that holiday weekend, as this year they are releasing The Mandalorian & Grogu at that same time.
Incredibles 3 will release in cinemas on June 16, 2028. This will be exactly 10 years after Incredibles 2, which was a massive hit at the box office, grossing $1.24 billion. Peter Sohn (Elemental) will be directing the film, taking over from Brad Bird, who directed the first two films. Bird remains on the project as a writer. Disney tends to release a kids film near the start of the summer like this. This year, Toy Story 5 is releasing at almost the exact same time, hitting theaters on June 19.
In the meeting, D’Amaro stressed the importance of telling resonant stories at Disney. His mantra being “Storytelling is at the heart of all we do” encompasses both original films and sequels. He stated the vitality of maintaining a balance between the two, stating that, “Original stories are immeasurable in terms of their value across all divisions of the company.” Disney’s slate for the rest of this year looks promising. Besides the aforementioned Toy Story 5 and Mandalorian & Grogu, the company has The Devil Wears Prada 2, Moana (Live Action), a new Ice Age film and Avengers: Doomsday slated for release.
