Director Molly Manning Walker is set to premiere at Cannes and experience the Cannes film festival to the fullest. Walker originally came out with two shorts during the pandemic, then came out with Good Thanks, You?, which tragically only premiered at Cannes virtually. It is not until How To Have Sex? that Walker can experience the Cannes Film Festival.
How To Have Sex? takes place in a party town in the Mediterranean, Malia, Crete. The film follows a group of three teenage girls on their rite-of-passage journey during the post-exam clubbing holiday.
Walker explains, “It looks at how we learn to have sex through the pressure of friendship, toxic masculinity, and societal expectations. It’s a ride through the highs and lows of intimate female friendship.”
Walker extends that How To Have Sex? is a continuation of Good Thanks, You? which went into sexual assault trauma. Walker had experienced sexual assault as teenager and believed it was not talked about enough. When sexual assault is brought up in society, it can worsen the experience and inhibit healing. How To Have Sex? is also based on Walker’s experience during similar party holidays as a teenager.
Walker says, “I have a very distinct memory of a bar crawl where I saw a blowjob on stage. I wanted to talk about how we are introduced to sex. Especially people who have experienced these clubbing holidays. Most women I know have experienced some form of sexual assault, and I think this needs to be talked about.”
Walker aims to start conversation on consent and having positive sexual experiences.
