When it comes to most motion pictures, a director has a say in the majority of its creation, that includes hiring cast members. However, one project that is currently getting its team together without a director present or even hired onto the team is the film Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Currently, the film is only getting planned out through bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran.
For some people in the film industry, such as film director Matthew Vaughn, this way of hiring actors without a director onboard for the project is weird.
According to Independent, this opinion came to light when promoting his new film Argylle. When speaking about actress Milly Alcock, known for her role as a young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in HBO’s House of the Dragon, it was brought up that she will be dawning the Supergirl cape in both the Supergirl film and Superman: Legacy.
Vaughn is a big fan of Alcock’s work and the actress even turned down a role in a different Vaughn project. While he is sad about that outcome, he finds the timing of the actor castings for these DC films to be weird, as he believes directors need to have a say when casting for a project.
But even with this weird process in the back of his mind, Vaughn said that he would consider directing Supergirl. “Never say never,” Vaughn said.
If hired on, this wouldn’t be the first time Vaughn directed an action or superhero film, as he has directed projects such as Kick-Ass (2010), X-Men: First Class (2011) and multiple films in the Kingsman film series.
