Gia Coppola has announced her next project: a documentary entitled superfans: screaming. crying. throwing up.. superfans is based on the book Larger Than Life by Maria Sherman, which analyzes the shift in pop culture influence caused by the rise of boy bands.
It celebrates the supportive fans who made those 1990s and 2000s boy bands the pop culture icons they are. Some of the bands that will be highlighted include New Addition, New Kids on the Block, Backstreet Boys, *NSYNC, One Direction, and BTS. The time range of these bands will give ample opportunity to showcase how fan support has grown larger than ever amongst ‘superfans.’
The film will highlight the action and environment created by these fanbases of millions worldwide, including LGBTQ+ movements in the One Direction fandom and the strong support from the BTS ARMY during the Black Lives Matter Movement.
Coppola has dubbed herself “a proud pop fangirl” and has expressed her excitement to work on a documentary project.
