The odds of a new Lethal Weapon film coming to theater screens may have just become more likely. Series star Mel Gibson himself has conversed extensively with director Allan Ungar, and is still in for a Lethal Weapon 5.
Gibson has been at the forefront of the Lethal Weapon series since its inception in 1987. Directed by Richard Donner, the film saw Gibson and Danny Glover team up as an unlikely police duo to take down a ring of heroin smugglers. Following the first film, the duo of Gibson and Glover immediately etched its way into pop culture, with the two returning for three more installments.
MovieWeb noted that although the Mad Max star is just a year shy of 70, his age isn’t stopping him. Allan Ungar has spoken at length with Gibson about a fifth installment and told MovieWeb that he’s more than willing to jump into it.
Ungar told MovieWeb that despite not knowing where a fifth Lethal Weapon is, in terms of development, Gibson had “always had a plan.” However, it may not come to fruition anytime soon, with Ungar continuing, “I think his plan right now, though, is to get back into the Passion of the Christ, which is shooting in Italy, so I think he’s going to be busy with that for a while.”
