The Marvel Cinematic Universe may sound a little different when Thor: Ragnarok comes to theaters. The Wrap broke the news that Mark Mothersbaugh has been brought on to compose the music for the third standalone Thor title. Mothersbaugh is likely best known as the lead singer and co-founder of the band Devo, whose iconic collection of songs include hits like “Whip It” and “Freedom of Choice.” He is also an accomplished film and television composer in his own right, with a wide-ranging and eclectic résumé, suggesting the original music for Thor: Ragnarok may perhaps be more memorable than previous MCU entries.
Mothersbaugh has through the years cemented relationships with filmmakers like Wes Anderson (composing the score for Bottle Rocket, Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou) as well as Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (The LEGO Movie, 21 Jump Street) and recently score last summer’s Vacation reboot as well as the a cappella blockbuster Pitch Perfect 2.
Thor: Ragnarok is currently in production with director Taika Waititi (Hunt for the Wilderpeople, What We Do in the Shadows) taking the reins. Chris Hemsworth leads the cast that also includes alums Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston and Idris Elba. 2-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett joins the Marvel fray as does rising star Tessa Thompson (Creed).
Thor: Ragnarok is slated to hit theaters on November 3, 2017.
