Hannibal, a historical epic about Carthaginian general Hannibal Barca, is reportedly dead in the water, according to the cinematographer. Robert Richardson, acclaimed cinematographer of films such as Wall Street, A Few Good Men, Kill Bill, Inglourious Basterds, and Hugo, revealed that he had been attached to the film for several months but that it “fell through” just two weeks ago. He said,
I was going to make Hannibal with Antoine and Denzel Washington for Netflix—Hannibal Barca being the general in Carthage—but it fell through just two weeks ago. I was on it for 10 or 12 weeks.
The film was set to be directed by Antoine Fuqua (Michael, Training Day) along with being distributed and funded by Netflix. Fuqua is hot off the heels of the massive success of Michael, but with Hannibal seemingly not moving forward, it is unclear what the next directed project is. Denzel Washington, on the other hand, has Here Comes the Flood with Robert Pattinson, Daisy Edgar-Jones, and Danai Gurira coming up, also for Netflix.
