Amazon MGM is cooking up a new thriller film with director Christopher McQuarrie and Denzel Washington attached. The film, which was at one point referred to as The Frame, is currently untitled. The film follows a former police detective serving a life sentence. When he develops terminal brain cancer and is given only 6 months to live, he is granted compassionate release and is allowed to make amends with his estranged daughter and grandson. He attempts to atone for his crimes, but his past has not forgotten about him.
The untitled film is written by Scott Barkan and Gregg Zehentner, with McQuarrie directing Denzel in the lead role. Christopher McQuarrie produces the film alongside his wife, Heather McQuarrie. Stuber and Nick Nesbitt for United Artists, Joseph Restaino of Hungry Bull Productions and Reza Moheet and Norman Aladjem of Mainstay Entertainment are also producing.
McQuarrie and Washington’s schedules both cleared up recently to make this possible. Denzel was supposed to star in a Netflix large-scale movie about the Carthaginian general Hannibal, but the project was canned after production costs skyrocketed. Before this, his most recent role was in Spike Lee’s remake Highest 2 Lowest for Apple and A24 last year. Chris McQuarrie just finished up directing Mission: Impossible: The Final Reckoning last year, wrapping up the franchise which he has helmed alongside Tom Cruise since Rogue Nation in 2015, over 10 years ago. The director is ready for a fresh start, and working with Denzel Washington seems like a great way to do that. Amazon MGM has confirmed the film for a theatrical release, slating it for October 1, 2027. Stay tuned for more updates on the Amazon MGM thriller.
