During the Super Bowl, Universal premiered the first trailer for Wicked: Part One, the first cinematic adaptation of the blockbuster musical.
The trailer opens on a magical and mysterious shot of a Witch’s hat, before showing a flurry of colorful and imaginative scenery around the world of Oz. We meet Elphaba, played by Cynthia Erivo, the woman who is fated to become the Wicked Witch of the West. She stars opposite global superstar Ariana Grande as Glinda the Good Witch. The film follows their complicated friendship and a love triangle with Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey). Other stars include Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, Ethan Slater, and Bowen Yang. The trailer ends with an iconic shot of Elphaba jumping out a window, in her full witch costume, flying on a broom.
Wicked opened on Broadway in 2003. Wicked was inspired by the novel of the same name by Gregory Maguire which was in turn inspired by the original Wizard of Oz book (by L. Frank Baum) and film. The trailer teased a clip of Erivo’s rendition of the film’s most iconic song, “Defying Gravity.”
Wicked: Part One is scheduled to release on November 27, 2024. Part Two is expected to premiere in 2025. Check out the world premiere teaser below.
