Fresh out of the Super Bowl, let’s check out the box office this weekend. Leading films by Sunday morning include Kenneth Branagh’s Death on the Nile and Kat Coiro’s Marry Me. Respectively, they earned $12.8 million and $8 million for their opening weekends.
Death on the Nile received several postponements due to the Covid-pandemic. Branagh plays Hercule Poirot, a legendary private detective and former policeman. Poirot travels to Egypt, where he meets his best friend and love interest Salome Otterbourne. Death on the Nile is a remake of its 1978 film. Death on the Nile had a lackluster start at the domestic box office, granted the film cost a hefty $90 million to produce.
Jennifer Lopez and Owen Wilson star in the romantic comedy Marry Me. The film is about a pop star singer Kat Valdez who discovers her fiancé is cheating on her right before their wedding in front of millions of fans. Kat decides to go on stage and marry a stranger in the crowd instead. They must learn to adapt to two different worlds unknown to them, and hopefully, they can find true love. Marry Me‘s production racked up to $23 million.
