Let’s be honest here: a Deadpool sequel was going to be inevitable no matter how the first movie ended up turning out. Not just because we live in world where superhero films are all about setting up future films, but because a self-aware character like Deadpool would be sure to make a nod to the audience at the possibility of one. Luckily for us, Deadpool was a financial and critical success, breaking numerous comic book movie box office records and giving us a near perfect depiction of the Merc with a Mouth in all of his fourth-wall breaking glory. And boy did he deliver the news in fashion, using the now-common post-credit sequences to both mock Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and give a hint at the upcoming Deadpool sequel, which will feature the first appearance of comic book character Cable.
Now, in a video interview from Collider during the Saturn Awards, Deadpool producer Simon Kinberg has reported that Fox is currently working on sequel, which will once again star Ryan Reynolds in the titular role (aka playing himself) and will be directed again by Tim Miller. “The guys, [original screenwriters Paul] Wernick and Rhett [Reese], are working on the script, and we hope to have the script very soon,” said Kinberg in the interview, “We hope to shoot the movie some time at the beginning of next year.”
As for the character of Cable himself, no actor (or actress, if Keira Knightly is considered) has completely secured the role yet, but from the way Miller and screenwriter Rhett Reese have described his character, they are going to play him as a foil to Deadpool’s antics in the sequel. Personally I’m crossing my fingers at the possibility of Ron Pearlman getting the part, partially because his look matches that of the comic character and partially because… well it’s Ron Pearlman. Not much else needs to be explained here.
Production for Deadpool 2 might not have begun yet, but that’s not going to stop Reynolds from dressing up as the character anytime soon. The character recently made an appearance at the end of the latest Japanese trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse, a bit of promotional advertising for the release of Deadpool in Japanese theaters this month.
