Today, Warner Bros. and DC have released the first trailer for the upcoming superhero film Blue Beetle. The movie stars Cobra Kai actor Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes, is directed by Angel Manuel Soto, and is written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer.
Recent college graduate, Jaime Reyes, becomes the wielder of a superpowered armor suit after bonding with an alien scarab. Jaime must discover why the scarab was sent to Earth while coming to terms with his new abilities.
The movie is DC’s first movie to focus on a Latino superhero, and Jaime’s family will play a key role in the film. Maridueña told The Hollywood Reporter, “The family aspect to this movie and to the character is inherent to the comics and so special. The family we’ve been able to create in the movie… I feel like that aspect of being a superhero hasn’t been tapped into a ton.”
Blue Beetle is among three films yet to be released by DC that were made before James Gunn and Peter Safran’s take over, alongside The Flash (release Jun 16th) and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (Dec. 25th). It is unknown how the other two films will fair, as Gunn and Safran have yet to announce their full plans for the new DC. However, as nothing prevents any involved actors or characters from appearing, the films will likely still be put out, even if they are not included in the current DC slate.
Blue Beetle will see a theatrical release on August 18th.
