French producer of award-winning Anatomy of a Fall, David Thion, is teaming up with Guillaume Senez and cowriter Jean Denizot for the new film Une Part Manquante. Be For Films will be representing the film in the international markets.
Une Part Manquante is a drama set in Tokyo. French actor Romain Duris, who had been in Senez’s previous film Our Struggle, will be returning to play Jay, a foreigner living in Japan. Similarly to Our Struggle, Une Part Manquante will be about fatherhood. Jay and his Japanese wife have separated and, since then, he has not seen his daughter, Lily, in nine years. He cannot get custody of Lily and hopes to find her in the city. Therefore, Jay leaves his life as a renowned chef behind to become a taxi driver and spends years looking for Lily. He loses hope and almost returns to France until Lily gets in his taxi. However, after being away for years, she does not recognize him.
Thion shares in a Variety interview that Senez came up with the film when visiting Japan to promote Our Struggle. Japan does not do shared custody, and when one parent is not Japanese, they could be prohibited from contacting the child until they are 18. Une Part Manquante is also influenced by The Searchers by John Ford. Thion explains that the film will
“tackle Japanese and French cultures through the story of an outsider torn by his emotions who tries to find his way in a foreign territory.”
Une Part Manquante is being filmed in Japan and starts production in October of this year. Versus will be the distributor for the film in Belgium and Haut et Court the distributer for France.
