During an ‘Ask Me Anything’ session on Reddit, Actor and comedian David Spade announced that he and Fred Wolf have written sequel to their 2001 film Joe Dirt. Spade further elaborated that they will be working with a smaller budget than before but hope to still have Kid Rock and Christopher Walken reprise their roles.
Joe Dirt followed the misadventures of the titular janitor as he traveled across the country to find his parents after they abandoned him. On his journey to find his family he encountered numerous eccentric individuals such as the Native American fireworks salesman Kicking Wing, and Walken as an ex-mobster hiding as a janitor in witness protection. The film was a modest commercial success, making back almost double its $18 million budget, but was a critical failure.
Spade did not give any concrete information on the sequel other than that he has a script ready. Regarding the budget he stated that studios “can’t make those $15-30 million comedies anymore. It’s either $3 million or $200 million, there’s almost no in-between.” Spade suspects that if Sony decides to go forward with Joe Dirt 2 it will likely skip a theatrical release and instead premiere on Crackle.com.
Also during the AMA, Spade mentioned the possibility of Grown Ups 3 and called The Emperor’s New Groove, in which he voiced the vain emperor Kuzco, his favorite movie.
