David Oyelowo Joins Lupita Nyong’o in ‘Americanah’

Fresh off his critical success in this year’s Selma, David Oyelowo is looking to re-team with Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment for the indie drama Americanah, reports Variety. He is set to star alongside Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave) – who will also produce – as a Nigerian couple who immigrate to the United States and London and forge their relationship while facing a lifetime of struggle.

The story will be based off the Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie novel. Screenwriters are still being fielded for the adaptation, in addition to a director.

This is also Nyong’o’s second time working with Plan B after her Oscar-winning role in last year’s 12 Years Slave. She will next be seen in Star Wars: Episode VII– The Force Awakens.

Oyelowo has enjoyed a busy and fruitful year in his career. Apart from the recent Golden Globe nomination for Selma, he has also appeared in the critically celebrated Interstellar and A Most Violent Year. Looking to 2015, he is set to appear in the crime thriller Captive with Kate Mara (Shooter), as well as act in and executive produce the biopic Nina, starring Zoe Saldana (Avatar).

Backed by two major rising stars in addition to Pitt’s production team, Americanah has a great chance for theatrical success and will likely bolster the streak of African and African-American narratives currently beginning to flourish in Hollywood.
