Rumor has it that David Leitch (Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2) will return to helm Deadpool 3. Currently, this is just rumor, but since Deadpool 2 met with praise from both critics and audiences, this leaves many fans excited for more Leitch. The former stuntman and co-director of John Wick is already on track to direct Fast and Furious spin-off Hobbs and Shaw, which means Deadpool 3’s production will begin far into next year at the earliest. Letich had this to say back in May:
”No, I’m not necessarily one and done. I would love to work with Ryan and Rhett and Paul and Simon again. We just had a perfect time, and I love this world, and I love this universe, and I love the character that he’s made so endearing to the fans, and so I would be grateful to work on something again. It just depends on time and place, so we’ll see what happens.”
Adding to the Deadpool 3 excitement is Ryan Reynolds (Life, Buried) wanting Hugh Jackman (Les Misérables, Logan) to appear in the film; not as Wolverine, but as Hugh Jackman. Jackman’s name is no stranger to the Deadpool films, as spoofing Jackman seems to be a favorite pastime of Reynolds; the chance to get both actors onscreen together again (cough, X-Men Origins: Wolverine) would be a dream come true.
For now, it seems that X-Force is the only definite way we will see Deadpool on the big screen in the near future. There are doubts that Deadpool 3 will even happen at all, with Reynolds himself casting doubt on the future of the franchise.
“I don’t know that there would be a Deadpool 3. I don’t,” Reynolds said. “I feel like the character, in order for him to function properly within his own universe, you need to take everything away from him. I don’t think that you can keep doing that. I do see him as being a part of X-Force, obviously. I would love to see him in a team-up sort of thing, like a mano a mano or a great female character from the X-Men universe. I just think if you’re going to do another Deadpool solo film, you’ve got to really, like, get that budget down to nothing and just swing for the fences, and break all kinds of weird barriers, and do stuff that no one else can do.”
Deadpool 2 made $734 million worldwide on a budget of only $110 million, so for now let’s assume that Marvel, 20th Century Fox, and Disney enjoy money and will swing for the fences with another Deadpool solo movie.
