Dave Franco made quite a name for himself after the recent success of hit biopic, The Disaster Artist, where he played actor and author of the original book, Greg Stetsero. With his performance as a famous public figure being well received, it was only a matter of time Franco would take on another biopic. This time however he’s taking a page from his brother James, as not only will he be portraying the famous “Ice Cold” rap artist, but also directing this feature film biopic. Dave Franco will be direct and star as Vanilla Ice in the upcoming biopic, To The Extreme.
The film is named after Ice’s debut album of the same name. Franco recently announced that his casting was official in a recent interview with insider, as the casting was initially rumored back in January of this year. Franco announced that the film will be similar in tone to James Franco’s The Disaster Artist as he stated that “people expected us to make a broad comedy where we make fun of Tommy Wiseau, but the more real we played it, the funnier and heartfelt it was”.
The film is still in pre-production due to the pandemic, however Franco has stated he has chatted with Ice regarding the role and Ice has been very good about giving the details for this upcoming biopic. Franco added that, “Just talking to him I can’t help but think about the rabbit holes I’m going to go down to get ready for the role”. Dave Franco certainly seems to be going in a similar route to James Franco’s directing career as Dave’s directorial debut, The Rental, is set for release this weekend. Prior to The Disaster Artist, James Franco directed a few smaller films as well, so for his brother Dave’s next feature film to be a biopic on a rather infamous person with an outlandish personality makes perfect sense in regards to career path. Hopefully Dave Franco will be able to become Vanilla Ice in the same believable way James Franco was able to portray Tommy Wiseau.
