Netflix just announced the release date of their recently acquired drama,  Ink. It will get a limited theatrical release on December 11 before coming to Netflix on January 8. The film, directed by Danny Boyle (28 Days Later, Trainspotting, Slumdog Millionaire), stars Guy Pearce as Rupert Murdoch in a drama about the rise of his tabloid empire.

The film also stars Jack O’Connell and Claire Foy, and is based on a stage play of the same name. James Graham, who wrote the Tony-nominated play, wrote the adapted screenplay himself for the film. By dropping the film in December and January, it is clear that Netflix plans to position this as an awards contender. Danny Boyle already has one Best Picture win under his belt for Slumdog Millionaire, a film which also won him an Oscar for Best Director. Guy Pearce was nominated for an Oscar 2 years ago with The Brutalist, so do not be surprised if Netflix throws this film into the ring for the Best Actor, Director, and Picture categories early next year. The film will premiere at the Venice International Film Festival, so its reception there could determine its awards potential.

Danny Boyle directed the horror sequel 28 Years Later last year, with him handing the reins over to Nia DaCosta for 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, which released in January. The plan was to make a trilogy of films, with Danny Boyle and Cillian Murphy returning for the third installment. The film has been greenlit, but it has yet to begin shooting, so that is likely a long ways out if it ends up happening.
