Daniel Craig‘s future as 007 hasn’t been confirmed as of yet, but the actor appears to be wasting no time in finding fascinating projects outside the realm of espionage. Craig has already committed to join Steven Soderbergh’s upcoming Logan Lucky as well as a limited Showtime series entitled Purity for uber-producer Scott Rudin and director Todd Field (Little Children). A new project may be the works for Craig as well – Kings, a film set during the 1992 Los Angeles riots.
If plans come together, Craig may join Oscar winner (and James Bond alum) Halle Berry in Deniz Gamze Erguven’s upcoming project. Erguven made major international splash with last year’s critically acclaimed Mustang, a film that was nominated for the Best Foreign Film Oscar; Kings would mark her English-language debut – it’s also a project that has been a dream for the director since graduating from the French film school Fémis. Like Mustang – which provocatively commented on gender roles in conservative Turkey – her latest film looks to meld both frankness and lightness.
As the 1992 LA riots engulf following the Rodney King trial, Kings follows the relationship between Berry’s protective mother and Ollie (the role Craig might portray), a white man who lives in South Central. We shall stay tuned to developments as they come in.
