In a move from Sony that even Madame Web couldn’t have predicted, the film depicting the clairvoyant web-slinger has been delayed from April 7, 2023 to October 6, 2023. The film is set to follow Dakota Johnson playing the title character’s origin story surrounding how she becomes the Virgil to the Spiderverse’s Inferno. Production photos seem to hint at sequences of the film taking place in the early 2000s.

With Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s overwhelming success tackling the multiverse, this could be setting up an new cinematic universe surrounding the web slinger. To that end, Kraven the Hunter is getting a spinoff film alongside Venom 3 and El Muerto spin offs to come out soon enough.

Sony is reluctant to give a reason for the film’s delay. However, morale on the set has apparently not been affected by the delay. Actor Sydney Sweeney told Variety:

“”I’ve been ordering a bunch of comic books… There’s a lot to learn. I’ve always been a really big fan of all the Marvel and Sony Universe movies. I’ve grown up watching them all and I’ve been engulfed in the entire world my entire life, so being able to be a part of that is such an incredible, incredible thing.”
